What Afterpay is — and isn't
Afterpay is a buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) service that pays the store for you today and lets you repay in four equal installments over six weeks, with no interest. In the United States it has been branded Cash App Afterpay since March 2025 — same product, owned by Block, Inc., the company behind Cash App and Square.
It is not a credit card: there's no revolving balance, no interest accruing month to month, and no annual fee. It is also not a cash loan — Afterpay only pays merchants, and only for a specific purchase. Each order is a separate, short-term installment agreement that ends when the fourth payment clears.
How Afterpay makes money: the store pays Afterpay roughly 4–6% + $0.30 of each sale. That's why the price you see is the same whether you Afterpay it or pay by card — and why the service is free to you as long as you pay on time.
Using it at checkout
Online, Afterpay appears as a payment option alongside cards and PayPal at partner stores. Choose it, log in or create an account, and you'll see your four-payment plan before you confirm. Approval is instant and decided per order.
Add to cart and choose Afterpay
Look for the Afterpay / Cash App Afterpay badge at checkout. If it's not there, the store may still be reachable through the Afterpay app (see below).
Log in or sign up in about a minute
You'll need a US mobile number, a US billing address and a US debit card, credit card, bank account, Cash App Card or Cash App Pay as your payment method.
Review the plan, pay the first 25%
Afterpay shows the four amounts and dates. Confirm and the first installment is charged immediately.
Afterpay pays the store; you pay Afterpay
The merchant ships as normal. Your remaining three payments auto-charge every 14 days.
The payment schedule
Every Pay in 4 order follows the same shape: 25% today, 25% in two weeks, 25% in four weeks, 25% in six weeks. You'll get a reminder before each one. Two things you can change:
- Pay early. Any installment, or the whole balance, can be paid ahead of schedule in the app at no cost.
- Reschedule once. Afterpay lets you move one payment per order by up to a few days, free, as long as you do it before the due date.
You can also turn off autopay for Pay in 4 and pay manually — useful if your card details change often, but riskier for missing dates.
Who can use it
Afterpay's published US eligibility rules are short:
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Age | 18 or older |
| Residency | US resident with a US billing address and mobile number |
| Payment method | US-issued debit or credit card, bank account, Cash App Card or Cash App Pay |
| Credit check | Soft inquiry only — doesn't affect your score and isn't visible to other lenders |
| Approval | Per order, based on your history with Afterpay, current open orders and available-to-spend |
New customers start with a lower spending limit — often a few hundred dollars — that grows with on-time payments. See how limits work.
In-store and in the app
The Afterpay app
The app is a shopping directory plus a card generator. Browse partner brands, or pick a store that doesn't integrate Afterpay directly (Amazon is the big one) and the app creates a single-use virtual card for the exact amount. Paste it at the store's checkout like any Visa and the purchase is split into four.
In-store with Apple Pay or Google Pay
In the app's In-store tab, set up the digital Afterpay Card (issued by Sutton Bank) and add it to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. Tap to pay at participating retailers — Target, Macy's, Nordstrom, Ulta and many more — and the same Pay in 4 plan applies. The in-store guide walks through setup.
The subscription-based Afterpay Plus Card extends tap-to-pay to most places that accept Apple Pay or Google Pay, for a monthly fee shown in the app. It's invite-based and worth it only if you shop in-store with Afterpay several times a month.
Returns and refunds
Return the item to the store as usual. Once the merchant processes the refund, Afterpay adjusts your plan automatically: remaining installments are reduced starting from the last one, and if the refund is larger than what you still owe, the difference goes back to your original card.
Two things to watch: partial refunds (the plan is simply recalculated), and final-sale items (no refund means all four payments stand). Afterpay can't force a store to refund — your rights are with the merchant.
If a payment fails
Afterpay retries the card and sends an alert. Nothing extra is charged during the 10-day grace period, but new purchases are paused until you catch up. After 10 days, a late fee of up to $8 is added to that installment; total late fees on one order never exceed 25% of the order value. The miss is not reported to credit bureaus, but a balance sent to collections can be.
Full detail, with a worked example, is on the late fees guide.
Pay Monthly, briefly
For larger online purchases (roughly $400–$4,000) some partner stores offer Afterpay Pay Monthly: 3, 6, 12 or 24 monthly payments with interest (APR disclosed at checkout, typically ~6.99–35.99%) and no late fees. Loans are issued by First Electronic Bank. It isn't available in-store or in every state. Compare it with Pay in 4 and a personal loan on the fees & limits page.
Frequently asked questions
Does Afterpay charge interest?
No. Pay in 4 is interest-free. The only possible charge is a late fee (up to $8 per missed payment, capped at 25% of the order). Pay Monthly plans do charge interest but have no late fees.
Is there a credit check?
Afterpay may run a soft credit check when you sign up or request Pay Monthly. Soft checks don't affect your score.
Can I use Afterpay for anything?
Only for purchases at stores that accept it (online, via the app's one-time card, or in-store through Apple Pay / Google Pay). It can't be used for cash, bills, rent or most groceries and gas at 0%.
How long does approval take?
Seconds. Each order gets an instant decision based on your Afterpay history and available-to-spend.
What if I need more than my Afterpay limit?
Split the payment between Afterpay and a card, use Pay Monthly where offered, or request a personal loan of $200–$5,000 that's repaid monthly.
